Teaching prize awarded – see Susannah Leach present the virtual laboratory session

11 September, 2017

Vice Dean Silvana Naredi presented diploma and flowers to Susannah Leach.

AWARD. Susannah Leach, this year’s winner of Sahlgrenska Academy’s teaching prize has now officially received her reward. The prize was awarded by Vice Dean Silvana Naredi on Tuesday, 5 September, in connection with the meeting of the Education Council.

During the meeting, several projects were presented that are conducted with support from teaching project funding at Sahlgrenska Academy.

“This is a real high point during the year for us in the Educational Council to be able to hear more about the projects carried out with teaching grants, and it is extra enjoyable when projects are rewarded with the teaching prize,” said Silvana Naredi when she introduced Susannah Leach’s presentation.

After the presentation, Susannah was surprised with flowers and a diploma.

Susannah Leach is being awarded the 2017 teaching prize for developing a new course component – a virtual laboratory session. The motivation for the prize notes that the virtual laboratory session fully utilises the advantages of peer learning – where students learn together and from each other – and the flipped classroom – which means that the students first learn the theoretical foundation and can then put this knowledge into practice in the classroom. The motivation also highlights the fact that the laboratory session has a clear research-based teaching that gives the students greater understanding of the research that lies behind the knowledge being taught, and Susannah Leach’s work is highlighted as an inspiration to other teachers to use digital tools in their teaching.

“The course in microbiology and immunology is one of the most appreciated courses in the entire medical programme, and I believe there is a culture in the course to find novel teaching solutions. If the plans of extending the medical programme become a reality, I believe that more courses will be able to be inspired by you,” commented Agneta Ekman during the meeting.

Here, you can see a new film where Susannah Leach briefly presents the course component she developed and is now being rewarded for:
