MARCH FOR SCIENCE. On April 22 2017, a march is organised across the world to put attention to the importance of science for society and for humanity. The goal is a broad manifestation with participants from all scientific areas.
— Today, the role of science is challenged around the world, and it is extremely important that we protect scientific freedom to seek and spread knowledge, says Pam Fredman, the University’s Vice-Chancellor.
Pam Fredman is herself participating in the march, and she is also one of the speakers. She hopes that the march will interest lots of people, both university employees and students, as well as the public.
The University’s primary objective is to create and disseminate new knowledge. According to Pam Fredman it is therefore natural and important that the University, together with other operators, put focus on the importance of free and independent science and engage in the March for Science. The march starts at Gustav Adolfs Torg and finishes at Götaplatsen, where the manifestation ends with speeches and other activities.
March for Science is a non-political and non-religious manifestation for science’s role in society. Gothenburg’s March for Science is hosted and coordinated by the International Science Festival Gothenburg, where the University of Gothenburg is one of the principals. Parallel manifestations will take place all over the world, including Stockholm, where the organisation Vetenskap & Allmänhet (Public & Science) is coordinator and host.
