LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS. Christina Jern is the winner of the advisory election for the position of dean of the faculty at Sahlgrenska Academy, with 371 votes, or 55.3% of the vote. The Advisory Board proposes that the current vice dean, Eric Hanse, be elected to a new term. A new advisory election for the position of vice dean will begin on Wednesday, March 8th.
“I would like to thank our colleagues for entrusting me with the great responsibility of leading our faculty. I’m thrilled to have received such overwhelming support. I would also like to thank the Nominating Committee for successfully implementing the voting process. Becoming dean of the faculty is an exciting new undertaking for me, and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Christina Jern when the election results were announced a few days ago.
Eric Hanse is a professor of neurophysiology (specializing in the functional development of synaptic signaling) at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. He has served as vice dean of Sahlgrenska Academy since 2012, and he proposes that he continue to serve the academy in this capacity.
Why do you want to stay on as vice dean, serving under a new dean?
“Well, I’ve been forced to admit to myself that being vice dean is really a lot of fun. But it’s been a constant struggle to juggle both my role as vice dean and the teaching and research responsibilities of my ‘real’ job. I’d been preparing to return to focusing on my “real” job for some time now, but now that the Advisory Committee has given me this opportunity, I’ve been given a chance to reconsider. After all, at this point I’ve managed to work two rewarding jobs for a good number of years -so I decided that perhaps I can continue to do so,” says Eric Hanse.
He believes it will be easy to work with Christina Jern in her position as dean, and thinks that as administrators, they complement each other well:
“Christina is very down to earth. She’s an expert on the university healthcare system, while I am very familiar with educational issues. Between the two of us, we also have an excellent understanding of the academy’s various fields of research.”
The faculty election for the position of dean and vice dean is purely advisory in nature. Vice-Chancellor Pam Fredman is formally in charge of making the appointments.
The advisory election for the position of vice dean will be held March 8-15th.
The vice dean election will be carried out in the same manner as the dean election. On the morning of Wednesday, March 8th, all eligible voters will receive an email containing a link provided by the online survey tool Sunet Survey. The email’s sender will be “Göteborgs universitet – enkät-survey.” Each voter will receive a unique link in their email, which will lead to a website where one may cast one’s vote. Votes can be cast using either your computer or your mobile phone. The election will run from early morning on Wednesday, March 8th until midnight on Wednesday, March 15th.
The electoral register that was compiled for the dean election will also be used in the vice dean election. The Advisory Board proposes only one candidate for the role of vice dean, Eric Hanse. However, you may also leave the ballot blank or write in your chosen candidate.
