Sixteen from the Sahlgrenska Academy celebrated for long and devoted service

10 February, 2017

HONOURS LIST. When the honours “For zealous and devoted service to the realm” were awarded at a ceremony last week, 16 of the University’s employees receiving this honour were from the Sahlgrenska Academy. One of them was Kjell Olmarker, Professor of Anatomy.

This honour can be awarded to employees at the University of Gothenburg who have been public sector employees for at least 30 years, or at least 25 years at retirement.

“When I got the invitation, I didn’t know at first what it was about. I was amazed to find that I’d been working at the University for that long,” says Kjell Olmarker, who thinks it is very nice that the University notices its employees in this way:
“The ceremony was warm-hearted. A jazz trio accompanied the event and Pam Fredman gave a welcome speech. After the photographs were taken on the steps, a very nice buffet was served.

Those awarded this honour can choose from among a number of thank-you gifts. A gold watch is a common one, but at this year’s ceremony, many chose instead a crystal bowl or a glass sculpture.
“I’m a student musician from way back myself, so I like medals. And now I’ve got a real one for the first time!” says Kjell Olmarker with a laugh.

Kjell Olmarker’s main tasks are teaching medical students in anatomy. His research concerns the mechanisms behind back pain and sciatica. Along with other colleagues, he is currently working on a whole new treatment strategy and innovation, which could lead to a better alternative to arthrodesis.

In total, 67 of the University’s employees were presented with awards at the ceremony, 16 of whom came from the Sahlgrenska Academy.
