Agneta Holmäng or Christina Jern could be our next dean

8 February, 2017

SELECTION OF DEAN. After a thorough process, the nomination committee is now presenting its two final candidates for the position of Dean of Sahlgrenska Academy: Agneta Holmäng and Christina Jern. Qualified employees may vote for either of these candidates or they may write in a preferred candidate.

Now that the nomination committee has presented its top candidates, it is clear that the next dean at Sahlgrenska Academy will likely be a doctor, a professor and a woman. Of the possible candidates interviewed, only Agneta Holmäng and Christina Jern remain.

Agneta Holmäng was born in 1959, and since 2001 is a professor of laboratory medicine. For eleven years, she has been chair of the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology.

Christina Jern was born in 1962, and since 2003 has been professor of neurology specializing in vascular diseases and vascular genetics. She has been vice dean for ALF affairs for the last year. Christina Jern is also a chief physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

We have had a very extensive and thorough process with over twenty meetings. In the final stage of the process, several candidates withdrew from the process and, after in-depth discussions and consultation with the vice-chancellor, the committee decided unanimously to present two final candidates which the faculty can choose between. Both Agneta Holmäng and Christina Jern have the necessary qualifications to lead Sahlgrenska Academy,” says Göran Stenman, chair of the Faculty Board’s nomination committee.

The candidates for dean, Agneta Holmäng and Christina Jern, will be presented in more detail in articles in Akademiliv next week. At lunchtime on Monday, February 20, there will also be a general Academy meeting where the candidates will introduce themselves. All employees are welcome to attend this meeting.

How is the vote held?

All Academy employees, with the exception of PhD students, are eligible to vote. To vote, the individual must be employed at least 50 percent, and the position must be permanent or involve at least two years of continuous employment. A leave of absence does not disqualify an employee from participating in the election. The preliminary list of voters at Sahlgrenska Academy indicates there are 1201 eligible voters.

Like the most recent elections at the Academy, this vote will be held electronically. The same day as the general Academy meeting on February 20, all eligible voters (i.e. employees listed on the voting list) will receive an email with a link from the web survey tool Sunet Survey. This link is unique for each person entitled to vote, and it leads to a web page where the vote is cast. Both computers and mobile phones can be used to vote.

Eligible voters can cast their ballot for either Agneta Holmäng or Christina Jern, and it is also possible to write in an alternative candidate.

The election will last for ten days, from February 20 at 13:00 until March 1. The faculty election is advisory and the dean will be formally appointed by the vice-chancellor.

The nomination committee is now working to select candidates for pro-dean, which the Academy will vote on in an advisory election after the vote for dean. The pro-dean is also appointed by the vice-chancellor.
