PODCAST IN SWEDISH. In this episode of Akademiliv the podcast, Elisabet Holm Jerlhag is our guest. Elisabet is Associate Professor of Pharmacology, and the podcast brings up addictions in general, alcohol addiction and the brain’s reward system.
In her research Elisabet Jerlhag Holm wants to understand what happens in the brain when a person has an addiction desease. Specifically, the research is focused on how the so-called appetite-regulating hormones affect the brain’s reward system for alcohol intake. The research team was the first in the world to show that alcohol is perceived as less rewarding and consumption decreases when the effect of these hormones is inhibited.
The research is experimental, aiming to understand what happens in the brain, hoping expanding the knowledge will lead to new ways to treat alcohol dependence.
