New weekly seminar series for researchers at Medicinareberget

25 November, 2016

bengt-o-ruth-vid-tavlan-720COLLABORATION. Wednesdays at 3 pm. Note it in your calendar. That’s the day and time for the Medical Hill Seminar Series, where primarily guest researchers will be speaking.
“In Umeå, we had a great series of seminars for researchers that attracted full houses. If we could do it in Umeå, we can do it here,” says Ruth Palmer, who initiated the series of seminars together with Bengt Hallberg.

When the researcher couple Bengt Hallberg and Ruth Palmer came to Gothenburg from Umeå just over two years ago, they were surprised that there were not more international research seminars at Medicinareberget. In Umeå, they had organized a long-running series of seminars, where both international and local researchers lectured, and to which all the faculty’s departments contributed.

“Everyone knew there would be an interesting lecture each week, in the same room and the same building. So you avoided making appointments at that time, if it was possible, to be able to attend the lecture,” says Bengt Hallberg.

A vibrant forum for scientific lectures is not just about being inspired by researchers from other countries or from other Swedish universities. Ruth Palmer feels it also serves an important local function. “Listening to talented researchers in a completely different field than my own often surprisingly helps me advance in my own research. I also look forward to meeting researchers working here at Sahlgrenska Academy at the lectures and expanding my contacts with them. There are so many talented researchers here at Medicinareberget who need to get together more often and develop collaborations.”

Starting November 23

Research group leaders of the Institute of Biomedicine and from the Lundberg Laboratory for Diabetes Research have been asked to book their international guests to lecture for the new series. Researchers at other institutions within Sahlgrenska Academy are also welcome to propose lecturers. The lecture series will maintain a high level of scientific examination, with a focus on molecular, genetic, cell biological, and translational research. The lecturers will often be international guests, and our own researchers may also present current findings.

The Medical Hill Seminar Series premieres on Wednesday, November 23. Anders Ståhlberg has invited Suman Mitra from Astra Zeneca to speak in the Ivan Östberg lecture hall. Gunnar C. Hansson has invited Christoph Becker-Pauly to lecture next Wednesday, November 30. This lecture will be given in the Ivar Ivarsson lecture hall at Medicinaregatan 3A.

The primary location of the lecture series will be the Arvid Carlsson lecture hall, but scheduling conflicts require that some of the initial lectures be held in the Ivan Östholm or Ivar Ivarsson lecture halls.
