GRANTS. Eleven researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy have received SEK 19.3 million from the research foundation IngaBritt och Arne Lundberg Forskningsstiftelse. The Foundation primarily funds the purchase of equipment.
This year’s largest grant was awarded to Jan Borén, a professor at the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine. He will receive three million kronor from the foundation for the platform he and his team have developed to analyze lipids and small molecular products from degradation (metabolites) using mass spectrometry. IngaBritt och Arne Lundberg Forskningsstiftelse has supported this platform previously, and Jan Borén and his team are thrilled to being awarded funds again to purchase new equipment.
“These technologies are developing very quickly, and it is extremely important to have access to competitive equipment,” says Borén. The equipment that the platform is based on is unusual at Swedish universities, and Borén’s group has analyzed samples for many researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers and other Swedish universities. The platform is also used to analyze patient samples for advanced studies in clinical chemistry at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
System for monitoring individual cells
Göran Landberg was the main applicant for another application that has also received one of the largest grants from the Foundation this year. His group has joined forces with several other research groups to establish a system that allows researchers to follow and remove individual cancer cells and normal cells in different types of growth. They have received SEK 2.5 million to establish the system.
“The system will facilitate the study of cancer stem cells and other subpopulations of cells that we need to learn more about so that we can develop new cancer therapies,” says Landberg. “This amazing grant means that many research groups will now be able to carry out more complex experiments and, above all, be able to collect better quality data since we can separate and analyze individual cells in an optimal way.
IngaBritt och Arne Lundberg Forskningsstiftelse seeks to promote medical science research primarily related to cancer, kidney diseases and orthopedics. The Foundation prioritises the purchase of devices, aids and equipment. Research in the Gothenburg region has priority.
