VISITING RESEARCHER. In an article in Nature Medcicin, leading scientists come to the conclusion that the Zika virus is extremely dangerous for the fetus, and the the brain damage occurs so fast that the only way to prevent the injury is to prevent the infection from getting a hold in the pregnant woman.
Already ten days after infection a fetus in a macaque monkey had developed significant brain injury. The only chance is to prevent the infection from taking hold in pregnant women, through the development of a vaccine. It is however unclear how further research will be funded.
First author of this paper is one of the world’s leading Zika researchers, Professor Kristina Adams Waldorf, at the University of Washington. She is also a visiting researcher at the University of Gothenburg.
