AWARD. Yesterday, the students’ pedagogic award, Pedalen (The Pedal) went to Michael “Mike” Winder. He teaches pharmacology (the study of drugs) in several of the faculty’s courses, but primarily within the pharmacist and pharmacy program.
How does it feel to receive the award? What does it mean to you?
“Of course it feels great and inspiring! It gives me even more energy and desire to develop my pedagogic skills and the teaching segments and courses that I participate in. I will proudly hang the diploma in my office.”
How would you describe your teaching style?
“That might be something someone else should answer, but, I think that I am seen as extremely enthusiastic and happy, which is based on the fact that I genuinely think it is fun to teach. Hopefully I manage to maintain good and clear structure at the same time.”
Do you have any teaching tricks that you are extra proud of?
“In that case, it would be that I do my best to implement my pedagogic conviction that you learn better through discussion and interaction. For one thing, I always push those I teach to ask a lot of questions and the other is that I like to pose questions to those who are listening. In part this is to break the monotony, but primarily to trigger a reflective way of thinking.”
What do you think is the most fun about being a teacher at Sahlgrenska Academy?
“Lots! But, if I have to choose one specific thing, then it is the times when you can see by the look in a person’s eyes that what you just explained has opened a doorway to knowledge.” Those looks are what you always strive for.”
