RANKING. The Institute of Odontology at the University of Gothenburg came in fifth in the overall rankings of odontology institutes of higher education in the world. However, scientifically, the institute ranked third in the world.
“We are starting to get used to seeing us at the top of the list when the rankings appear. I can state that we have a stable position as one of the world’s leading institutes of higher education in odontology,” says Annika Ekestubbe, Head of the Institute of Odontology and who is pleased that so many Swedish institutes of higher education have high rankings:
“Three of the four Swedish institutes of higher education in odontology are among the top thirty on the list. I think that shows just how well Swedish dental care stacks up in an international context.
The QS list is partially based on the institute of higher learning’s reputation, both its academic reputation and its reputation as an employer. This grade is generated from questionnaire answers from thousands of researchers worldwide. As the institute of higher education’s reputation weighs so heavily in the ranking, it lifts the grade of Karolinska Institute, which ranks third in Sweden. Even the list’s number four, King’s College London, receives a boost from its good reputation and takes fourth place.
Even citations and H-indexes contribute to list rank. Citations are measured as citations per published article, instead of citations per employed researcher. The H-index is a way of measuring both the productivity and impact of a researcher. Here, the score for the University of Gothenburg is high in odontology.
“We conduct high quality research that is often cited, but we are not as well-known as some other universities. If you only look at the factors that measure a research’s impact and scientific quality, then we rank third place,” says Annika Ekestubbe, Head of the Institute of Odontology.
According to the list, the world leader is the University of Hong Kong followed by the University of Michigan and Karolinska Institute. King’s College London is ranked fourth and the University of Gothenburg takes fifth place.
