Feminism, fairy tales and farce

13 April, 2016

STUDENT.  Malice at the palace! Students with a flair for farce will be having fun with Cinderella, perhaps the most beloved of Grimm’s fairy tales, this year. In addition to a few feminist twists and turns, the audience can expect a joke or two at the expense of the local fish population.

“We have adopted a contemporary setting, added some feministic flavoring, brought out the main character’s iron will, given her a fawning friend, dressed her mother-in-law in velour, thrown in a dash of adolescent crisis, lured a troll out of the woods and aimed a few barbs at marine creatures, mostly the small kind.”

Colorful characters

The plot has a number of surprises to offer, spiced with colorful characters and jokes that nobody could possibly anticipate. Johanna is equally enchanted by the process of putting the production together. “We have so many excited students working on the performance, and our big reward will be the response of the audience. Hearing them laugh, bowing to their applause and celebrating together afterwards will be wonderfully exhilarating.”

Three performances are scheduled, each followed by a party at Villa Medici, the student union building.

As usual, the tunes will be familiar but the lyrics will startle even the most inveterate satirist. Those who end up submitting the winning entries to the competition are often veterans of previous performances.

Johanna Börjesson is coordinating the entire production.

“Many of the lyricists have been at it for a number of years,” Johanna says. “You need a good ear to rhyme in a way that both tickles the imagination and clarifies the plot, and a little experience never hurts.”

All-student production

Approximately 60 students from the various Sahlgrenska Academy programs are involved in the show. They are responsible for everything – script, music, direction, set design, acting and marketing.

“You wouldn’t believe how many talented students we have at Medcinareberget,” Johanna says. “I’m very proud of what we have come up with this year. We’d be absolutely thrilled if you can make it to one of the performances and join in all the fun we have been having.”
