RANKING. When QS World University Rankings recently released their list of the world’s best universities within the field of Nursing, the University of Gothenburg was ranked 35th. Thus, nursing is the second field at Gothenburg to place in the top one hundred in the QS subject rankings.
This is the first time that the world’s institutions of higher education are ranked in the category of Nursing. The list is topped by two American Universities, the University of Pennsylvania followed by Johns Hopkins University. Karolinska University was ranked best among the Swedish universities, capturing fifth place. The University of Gothenburg was ranked second in Sweden and ninth in Europe.
“It is gratifying and something to be proud of,” says Ingela Lundgren, Head of the Institution of Health and Care Sciences.
She continues,
“It is amazing that as many as six Swedish universities are among the top one hundred in the world. It is clear that Sweden holds a strong international position in care.”
QS World University Rankings currently produces 42 subject-specific lists. According to the company, the lists highlight the world’s top universities. The rankings are based on academic reputation, their reputation as an employer and research breakthroughs. The company bases its rankings on the reports of thousands of academicians and employees. Research breakthroughs are based on, such things as, the number of citations.
According to Magnus MacHale-Gunnarsson, Investigator in Analysis and Evaluation at the Grants and Innovation Office, there are flaws in the methods that the analysis company uses to create the rankings. At the same time, he notes that it is fantastic that research at the University of Gothenburg has received international recognition.
“To be ranked as 35th in the world in the field of nursing is excellent. Previously, the University of Gothenburg only had one other subject that ranked high, and that was dentistry, in 5th place.
Lund University is ranked 47th in list. Even Linköping, Umeå and Uppsala are in the top one hundred, but the exact ranking of these institutions of higher education does not show.
