CLINICAL APPLICATION. For the first time a uterus transplant ha been conducted in the US, according to CNN. During the operation, conducted at the Cleveland Clinic, the methodology developed at the University of Gothenburg in collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital was used.
Unlike the Swedish uterine transplants, where the uteri came from healthy donors, the american surgeons used a uterus from a brain-dead woman.
Nearly 3000 women are missing or have a non-functional uterine, in Sweden only. The worlds first baby from atransplanted uterus was born in Gothenburg, in September 2014. The birth was the result of a long term research project, which started at the University of Gothenburg 1999. After more than ten years of preparation nine women were transplanted, resulting in five pregnancies and four live births.
