GRANTS The University of Gothenburg has received just over SEK 121 million from the Swedish Research Council’s large funding opportunity. A distinct improvement from last year, the announcement meant that Gothenburg once again obtained the second highest award of all universities that participated.
The SEK 121 million earmarked for the University of Gothenburg represented 15% of the total funds awarded for health and medical research. Last year’s figures was 13%.
The university regained its status as the second highest winner. At SEK 367 million, Karolinska Institutet received exactly three times as much. Uppsala University was third and Lund University was fourth.
”I am gratified by the improvement, but we shouldn’t be too smug about it,” says Olle Larkö, Dean of Sahlgrenska Academy. ”The results were approximately what he had anticipated.”
The largest grant went to Ingmar Skoog, Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology and the Director of the AgeCap Center. He obtained a total of SEK 7.2 million to proceed with the H70 population studies that have been under way since 1971.
”I was thrilled by the announcement,” Professor Skoog says. ”It was a powerful confirmation that our research is heading in the right direction.”
The studies will include more sophisticated biological projects that incorporate MRIs of circulation, neural networks and microbleeding, etc., neurochemical analyses in collaboration with Kaj Blennow and Henrik Zetterberg, body composition and genetics.
”Now we will have the chance to explore the dynamics of Alzheimer’s many years before the first symptoms develop, as well as the biology of depression in the elderly,” Professor Skoog says. He also points out how important the interdisciplinary effort at AgeCap is.
”That kind of cooperation is essential if we are to make real breakthroughs in understanding widespread diseases. The chance to learn more about so many aspects of life – everything from neurochemical changes in the cerebrospinal fluid to the love lives of the elderly – is totally fascinating.”
This year’s health and medicine funding opportunity covered project grants for general research, young scientists and alternative laboratory experimental methods in accordance with the 3R principle, as well as grants to employ part-time researchers in a clinical setting.
