CLINICAL RESEARCH. An academic hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, will be the first in the US to implement uterus transplant. Cleveland Clinic is now preparing transplants for ten infertile women, based on research carried out at the Sahlgrenska Academy.
The research on uterine transplants have been going on at the University of Gothenburg since 1999. After more than ten years of preparation, nine women were transplanted. Five of these women have become pregnant, and four children have been born. So far, the Swedish research team has been alone in the world having performed uterus transplants successfully.
During the coming winter and spring, the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio is going to offer uterus transplant to ten women. The women are of childbearing age, and have either been born without a uterus, lost their uterus or have a uterus that is no longer functioning.
In Sweden, Sahlgrenska University Hospital recently proposed that uterus transplantation is to be included in the hospital’s care offer.
