MEET OUR RESEARCHERS. [This podcast is in Swedish] The first guest for the season in Akademiliv the podcast is Jan Derks, a researcher at the Institute of Dentistry, who just defended his thesis Effectiveness of implant therapy in Sweden. The thesis shows that an overwhelming majority of elderly people who received implants are satisfied with the treatment, but that there also are patients who have problems with inflammation.

The implant is a kind of artificial dental root – a screw that serves as a root for a man made tooth. When the screw is firmly healed in the jaw bone, dentists can fit a man made tooth on it – and the patient does not need to use removable dentures anymore. The treatment was developed in Gothenburg by Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark in the 60s and 70s, and has since revolutionized the possibilities to treat missing teeth. Now it is estimated that between ten and 14 million implants are inserted into the mouths worldwide each year.
Supervisor for Jan Derk’s thesis is Professor Tord Berglundh.
