REFUGEE CRISIS. The Department of Political Science at University of Gothenburg has donated over SEK 100 000 to refugees Through their Generosity Challenge the department invites other departments at Gothenburg University to do the same.
Europe is undergoing the greatest refugee crisis since the Second World War and politics and society mobilizes to facilitate the affected people’s burden. The University is a place in society where the discussion of political problems and possible solutions for dealing with them can be at their strongest.
As part of the University of Gothenburg, Department of Political Science decided to collectively take a stand for human values in the current crisis. Through a petition, the department has created a Generosity Challenge with a call to each employee to donate 5-10 percent of their monthly salary to an organization that help people in need. The Department has donated over SEK 100 000.
Now _ other departments within the University of Gothenburg and other universities are challenged to start a similar collection. You who choose to accept the challenge – please inform Helena Stensöta in Department of Political Science which coordinates the results of the challenge. Email:helena.stensota@pol.gu.se.
So far, the Department of Psychology has accepted the challenge.
The challenge of generosity from the Department of Political Science has already been replicated in the Netherlands. A former co-worker at the department that received an e-mail of Generosity Challenge responded:
”Inspired by your charity email campaign, I set up something similar over here at Amsterdam’s European and international law department. A day in, it’s already quite successful, with nearly a quarter of all our staff responding. Just thought you might be pleased to hear about the “continental ripples” of your great initiative.”
The Department of Political Science has donated money distributed to the following organizations:
ActionAid, Erikshjälpen, Ingen Människa är Illegal, Läkare utan gränser, Matteuskyrkan i majorna, Radiohjälpen, Rädda barnen, Röda korset, Svenska kyrkan, UNHCR, UNICEF, Worldvision.org’s Syrian refugee crisis effort.
