Easier to report on the work environment and damage

16 June, 2014

If something happens at work that can lead to an injury or illness, such incidents, by law, shall be reported. That is not always the case today. It could also be risk of becoming an incident, that there is a high threshold that someone can trip on, or poor ventilation that causes illness.

This fall introduces a system that will make it simple and convenient to report occupational injuries, safety incidents, environmental anomalies, and suggestions for improvement. The system GURIA stands for GU risk, incident analysis and deviation.
– We must have order, to be able to work systematically with the work environment, says Carin Norlin, who is project manager for GURIA.

Today, those who work with the administration of these issues manually collect and compile data. Instead of having paper in binders and fill in various forms, there will now be a system.
– It allows one to get an overview and an opportunity to actually do something about the problems. For prefects, who are responsible for the working of the institutions, it will also be easier to get information about what’s been done before.

A web interface for tablet devices is additionally being developed to facilitate the carrying out work environment inspections.

Many of the work-related injuries reported each year does not happen at work, but on the way to and from work. In addition to the importance of reporting injuries, it is equally important to report incidents that could have led to the accident, says Carin Norlin who also invites all to come up with suggestions for improvement.
– We will not only report when something has happened, but also think that if we do this, it could be much better.

The big change is that all employees can report various types of abnormalities related to health and safety and the environment in a single system. This is done directly in the Staff Portal under “Tools.” There you can choose what you want to report, and various field opens. The system generates different forms that is forwarded.
– First and foremost, we must get better at reporting and it is important that you do it all at once, otherwise the risk is that it will be forgotten. Now we have a good system support for it. We have chosen a supplier that has large customers in the county and municipality.

Already this summer, several institutions are to test the system and in October, it’s time to launch it throughout the university.

– It will be good to get a modern system that collects all incidents of environmental, safety and working environment. One advantage I see when everything is digitized is that we can easily generate statistics when we need to get an overview, says Johan Rystedt, personnel officer at the Sahlgrenska Academy and one of the test pilots for the new system.
