Of the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation’s total funding allocation of SEK 111 million in support of Swedish research projects, SEK 22 million will go to researchers in Gothenburg. The aim of the research being undertaken is to save lives by developing methods and treatments to help people suffering from cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
Cardiovascular diseases have the highest mortality rate of all diseases in Sweden. An estimated 1.4 million Swedes suffer from cardiovascular diseases and a further one million from respiratory-tract and pulmonary ailments.
The Heart-Lung Foundation is in the process of distributing a total of SEK 111 million in funding. This money will primarily be used to support research that has the potential for rapid application in the field of practical care.
Of the projects awarded funding, 20 are being led by Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg and/or Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The selected projects, which will share a combined total of SEK 22 million in funding, include research into why people with diabetes and high levels of blood lipids are at increased risk of heart attack, and what determines who is at risk of contracting Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
The Heart-Lung Foundation’s Research Council consists of 20 experts from across Sweden, and provides ongoing support for approximately 250 research projects, thanks to public donations.
Of this year’s 97 project grants, 66 were allocated to cardiovascular research and 31 to research into pulmonary diseases.
The project grants are awarded to individual research projects with durations of up to three years.
