The Medical program should be extended by one term, and  the requirement of the AT service should be discontinued. That is the main message of the investigator Stefan Lindgrens proposals to the Government announced today. The investigation also suggests that the requirements for medical degree are should be sharpened.

The proposal involves a streamlining of medical training, which quickly will lead to license to practice medicine expertise. By abolishing the requirement of the AT service _ the total time until the students get their licence is shorter, even though training will be extended by one semester. The new objective suggested by the inquiry suggests for the medical degree has a strong emphasis on scientific approach, medical decision-making and professional competencies, for example communications skills, ethics and social responsibility. The objectives of the training have a clear link to the objectives of good care.
– To meet the challenges healthcare faces , the medical training needs to be redone from scratch, says the government’s special investigator Stefan Lindgren, Professor of Medicine at Lund University and chief of gastroenterology at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö.
The whole learning process until medical license is approved will be covered by the university’s requirements for quality, scientifically and national quality inspection.
Today, many physicians are working without full competence with tasks that do not always correspond to the actual skills, investigator Stefan Lindgren writes on the DN-Debatt today. He believes that the proposal involves that health care, rather than satisfying a need related to the number of students who receive Swedish degree, can target its resources towards recruitment to the areas where the needs of specialist skilled physicians is greatest.
The reformation of the medical training program is proposed to be applied starting autumn 2015.
