Welcome to the Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars, a series of seminars on Thursdays at 15-16. This seminar will be conducted in Lecture Hall Arvid Carlsson at Academicum and online through zoom webinar.
Here is the link to the webinar: https://gu-se.zoom.us/j/68451646009
The seminars are open to anyone interested in taking part of scientific breakthroughs and projects in the medicine and health science field. Scientists, students and other staff from GU, VGR and other organisations with the common interest of medicine and health science, welcome!
Speaker: Professor Mats Brännström, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska academy, GU
Topic:
Absolute uterine factor infertility is due to either a congenital/surgical absence of the uterus or presence of a non-functional uterus, which cannot sustain a pregnancy for a duration that permits neonatal viability. This type of infertility, affecting 1:500 women, was for many years regarded untreatable. In 1998, a young woman who would undergo surgery for cervical cancer presented the idea to me that uterus transplantation (UTx) would be a way to restore her fertility after cancer surgery with removal of the uterus. Our group then started a translational research journey spanning over a decade of experiments in five animal species, before we launched the first human clinical UTx trial in 2012. The world´s first birth after a UTx procedure occurred at Sahlgrenska in 2014 and since then 16 more babies have been delivered in Sweden and more than 60 babies have been born worldwide. The talk will cover key animal experiments, surgery of human UTx, outcomes after UTx, and the future with robotic surgery and bioengineered uterus.
Host: Randa Akouri, Inst. of Clinical Sciences, SA
