Welcome to the Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars, a series of seminars on Thursdays at 15-16 (OBSERVE, this seminar is at a Wednesday). This seminar will be conducted in Assembly room Birgit Thilander at Academicum and online through zoom webinar.

Here is the link to the webinar: https://gu-se.zoom.us/j/64782023551

The seminars are open to anyone interested in taking part of scientific breakthroughs and projects in the medicine and health science field. Scientists, students and other staff from GU, VGR and other organisations with the common interest of medicine and health science, welcome!

Speaker: Dr. Patrick MacDonald, University of Alberta, Canada

Topic:

Pancreatic islet cell dysfunction is a main pathophysiological feature of type 2 diabetes. In autoimmune type 1 diabetes, most insulin producing beta cells are destroyed and wether surviving beta-cells behave ’normally’ remains an open question. Through our human islet phenotyping program, and the development of methods to link single-cell transcript expression and electrophysiological analysis (pancreas patch-seq) we seek to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying islet cell dysfunction in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In this talk I will describe our human islet phenotyping efforts, including recent unpublished work to examine islet cell function from organ donors with type 1 diabetes and our efforts to revisit the role for intracellular redox signalling in the control of islet cell function.
