Modern technology provides new conditions for biotechnology and genetics, and with the help of AI you can build intelligent robots to fully automate the scientific research – from forming a hypothesis to executing the experiment and analysing the results. But how do you make sure that the research is acceptable? What ethical challenges must be considered? This, and much more, is discussed in an online seminar organized by Chalmers.
Speakers:
- Max Tegmark, professor of physics at MIT, USA, cosmologist and researcher in machine learning, author of many books and a busy lecturer. He says that AI is no longer science fiction. Is it likely that we will create superhuman intelligence? How should our judiciary handle autonomous systems? What are the consequences of automation?
- Ross King, professor at Chalmers with research focusing on machine intelligence. He will talk about “DNA Supremacy: The Potential of DNA-based Computation”. Will he also introduce us to the robot Eve, the Chalmers’ robot scientist?
- Elin K Esbjörner, Associate Professor of Chemical Biology at Chalmers, FoRmulaEx research centre. She will present how she works to develop tools and technologies that can improve mRNA delivery by tricking cells to take up this promising therapeutic cargo.
- Stefan Jansson, Professor of plant biology at Umeå University. He will talk about how CRISPR-Cas9 – the genetic scissor – is used to modify the genome of plants and other organisms.
The seminar ends with a panel discussion about research ethics and boundaries, moderated by Helena Stålnert, communication advisor and former news anchor at Swedish Television.
The seminar is held in English.
