Welcome to the Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars, a series of seminars on Thursdays at 15-16. The seminars are, during fall 2020, mostly be conducted through zoom.
The seminars are open to anyone interested in taking part of scientific breakthroughs and projects in the medicine and health science field, scientists, students and other staff from GU, VGR and other organisations with the common interest of medicine and health science.
Topic:
Drug discovery and development is going through a transformational journey. In recent years, highly innovative and effective medicines to people suffering from cardiometabolic diseases have been developed, but still many patients remain either untreated or with poor outcomes. During this lecture, Marcus Schindler will outline how the pharmaceutical industry is rethinking the drug discovery model by getting answers to some key questions: How can we better identify and validate future drug targets? Which model systems to employ to define increasingly smarter ideas that are brought into the development pipeline? Which innovation models to use to gather creative and disruptive ideas and turn them into meaningful and impactful treatments?
This talk will cover some of the challenges that the pharmaceutical industry faces, including the limitations of traditional approaches, and some of the methods available to tackle these challenges. To successfully navigate this journey, we also need to be better at understanding the needs and methodologies to bridge the gap between academia and industry at all stages of the drug discovery and development journey, and the ways that the pharmaceutical industry can connect to innovation happening outside of its own walls.
Host: Michael Winder
