Welcome to attend a web-seminar introducing Bayesian statistics. This is a method of great interest in statistics and data science today, and it opens up many opportunities for new interesting approaches in research We want to give you a first glimpse on the Bayesian approach and its usefulness.
In the classical statistical method (so-called frequentist statistics), characteristics of a population such as disease incidence or treatment effect of a drug are considered to be constant unknown quantities, that we want to learn about using data. In Bayesian statistics, these quantities are considered as random variables with probability distributions. We can therefore, before the analysis (a priori) characterize the distribution, for example based on previous data and clinical judgment.
With the help of new data we can then learn more about the quantities. One strength of the Bayesian method is that the scientific process of gradually increasing knowledge comes naturally into the analysis. Many complex problems are easier to understand and analyze Bayesian, especially with an increased access to user-friendly software. Knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an important complement to traditional methods in a researcher’s methodology.
The seminar is aimed at researchers in medicine and public health, with no previous experience of Bayesian methods.
Attending the seminar is free of charge, just sign up by sending your name to the email address anna.ekman@gu.se and you will receive a Zoom link to attend.
