Bo Söderpalm, professor of psychiatry with a focus on substance abuse / addiction, receives this year’s drug research award from CAN, both for his scientific and clinical work, which in a significant way stimulates Swedish alcohol research. His basic research is closely linked to clinical practice, where he has contributed to several important breakthroughs, by first identifying mechanisms in the brain that are central to addiction development, and then investigating how pharmacological treatment options affect alcohol intake in people with alcohol dependence. Bo Söderpalm’s clinical research has shown that a biomarker for active alcohol intake better predicts actual alcohol intake than self-reported intake. The award was presented last week during the Förebygg.nu conference in Gothenburg.
