Akademiliv congratulates Anne Uv, newly appointed professor! She studies cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the properties of epithelial cells, that is, the cells that make up the outer layer of all body surfaces and many organs, such as lung, vessels and kidneys. Disturbed function in epithelial cells can for example lead to altered fluid flow, inflammation or cancer. With the fruit fly as a model system, Anne Uv and her colleagues have been able to show how organs with tubular structures, such as the kidney, can get the right dimensions, and how the epithelial cells are coordinated around a temporary structure that keeps the tube open. They have also shown how contacts between three cell corners are formed in order to maintain barrier function. Anne Uv is committed to the next generation of researchers, and to her teaching within cell biology, developmental biology and histology. She is responsible for the course in functional histology at the medical program, and she also teaches biomedical analysts students.
