Topic:
In 2020, there were 1.85 billion young people 10 to 24 years of age in the world, 90 per cent of whom live in developing countries. One in four young people were affected by violence or armed conflict. More than 100 million adolescents did not attend school.
Although during the past decade, the proportion of young women who were married as children decreased by 15 per cent, there are still approximately 650 million girls and women alive today were married before their 18th birthday. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the second- leading cause of death for adolescent girls worldwide, and some 3 million girls aged 15 to 19 years undergo unsafe abortions every year. Adolescents and young people aged 15-19 years represent a growing share of people living with HIV worldwide. Age of consent, stigma, general opposition to SRHR and gender issues are some of the many barriers that hinder adolescents from receiving the care and information they need. My intervention will discuss;
- How can we ensure that the necessary information and services are accessible, affordable, acceptable and of quality to young people and especially adolescents in a way that takes their voice, needs and rights into account?
- How can they be empowered to be the main agents of change in their own lives that they have a right to be?
- Where do we go from here to put the A in SRMNCAH?
